St. Louis Trolley Meetings

On Wednesday, July 8, 2009, the East-West Gateway Council of Governments (EWG), Loop Trolley Company and Citizens for Modern Transit hosted a Public Informational Meeting at the Regional Arts Commission (RAC), 6128 Delmar Blvd. in St. Louis, Missouri from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. The purpose of the meeting was to garner public input on the proposed alignment(s) and vehicle concept(s) for the St. Louis Loop Trolley System from the Delmar Loop to Forest Park. More than 180 people attended.

During the open house the public had an opportunity to view and comment on the vehicle type and proposed routes/ stops developed by the Loop Trolley Company and consultant team. Those in attendance were also presented with ridership forecasts and estimated costs to ride, build, and operate the service each year. There were 6 common themes that ran through peoples' comments and suggestions.

The first three were favorable including: Strong agreement to the trolley service expanding into other areas i.e. Central West End, Grand Avenue, and the Zoo; strong agreement that the trolley will increase the growth of economic development; and strong agreement that bringing trolley service back to the St. Louis region is a great idea.

Three other common themes were in opposition to some of the materials presented including: a strong opposition to turnaround at Trinity; strong disagreement that the trolley service will minimize travel delays; and strong opposition to trolley service riders parking at Trinity possibly disturbing the residents that live in adjacent neighborhoods.

The comments received will be evaluated as the design team continues to move forward with modifying the alignments based on public input, current conditions, and technical data being gathered and analyzed.
